Catholic men looking for a way to help others
The Knights of Columbus is an International fraternal organization, whose membership is focused on banding together to assist our Church, families, our fellow Knights, and our communities in whatever ways we can. To become a Member you only need to be a Catholic man (18 years or older), in good standing with the Church interested in helping others.
Below are some examples of what the members of the John J. Council are involved in:
-
Run the Warren Delp Memorial Blood Drive at St John's (in May).
-
Members work on the breakfasts/dinners for the Stride Wounded Warriors program and senior luncheons at St John's.
-
Hold the annual local qualifying tournament for the Knights of Columbus National Hoop Shoot content for children ages 10 through 14.
-
Administer the annual Garenani Scholarship Program for a graduate from ICC H.S.
-
Raise funds by holding the annual End of Summer Garage Sale at St John's and the St. Patrick's dinner dance.
-
Collects bottles and cans at St.John's to benefit the church maintenance fund.
-
Maintain the St. John's cemetery reflection area.
-
Run the Mother's day flowers sale to support the Alight Pregnancy Center.
-
Conduct Christmas card sales to sponsor a seminarian.
Garenani Scholarship:
For over thirty years the Council has annually awarded a four-year scholarship to an Ichabod Crane High student who goes on to college and earns a degree in music. The past years of low yielding investment instruments has led to declining balances in that fund. The council plans to continue a dialogue about the future of the fund and the scholarships that are awarded. The discussion will continue at the next meeting in May. All Brothers are encouraged to attend these meetings. Your input and guidance will be invaluable to these discussions. Please find the time to attend the next few meetings.
Bottles & Cans:
The Council is in need of volunteers for collection and redemption of the glass, plastic and cans that we collect in the bins at the church. In the past we have used these monies to pay for the church defibrillator and rugs in the classroom area and assist in paying for the new refrigerator in St. John’s kitchen area. Please contact the Council at the email address above or at the next Council meeting to volunteer your time to this very worthy cause. Thank you to all that have volunteered their time in this worthy fundraising effort.
